Old African Style: the Sable Sands ‘Rondavels’

The Rooms @ Sable Sands

Situated on a private Zimbabwean Forestry concession, the lodge harvests dead wood for cooking and heating water. A generator is run in the evening for guests to charge their cameras, phones, ipads and e readers etc and after the generator makes way for the nocturnal sounds of the wild African bush. There are solar lamps in the rooms for light.

Rondavels; traditionally thatched round rooms with en suite bathrooms

Sable Sands has 16 traditionally thatched round rooms ‘rondavels’ and they all have en suite bathrooms, the perfect blend of ancient culture, nature and modern convenience. The  rondavels resemble the traditional Zimbabwean rural village homes and are nice and cool in summer and warm in winter under their thick layer of thatch, which makes your stay unique (especially when an elephant comes to drink from the pool right in front of your room…).

Eleven Classic Forest rooms which are the original rooms.  One of the 11 Classic rooms that were built in 1989 and hosted even Queen Elizabeth II in 1991. The rooms have en suite bathrooms with sink toilet and shower and all Classic rooms are facing each other in a big semi circle in which the tree house and Swimming Pool are near rooms numbers 7,8,9,10 and 11. Click here to book /enquire and here to see our Safari Packages with Rates.

All rooms are suitable for single, twin and double occupancy and we are happy to add extra beds for children. Sable Sands is family friendly; we even have a swing!

Laundry, Swimming Pool & Tree House

Laundry service is provided at a small cost and limited wifi is available in the evenings before and after dinner.

This forest home also has a solar powered swimming pool for those hot African days and a tree house to relax in and breathe in the pure untainted air.

The Main Gazebo with Restaurant, Bar and Lounge

In the main gazebo there is the dining area, lounge, library and bar all overlooking the beautiful solar pumped waterhole in the Dete Vlei which is frequented by a host of wildlife visitors. You have the exciting opportunity to see sable antelope, zebra and thirsty herds of elephant and buffalo, and if you are really lucky you might even spot a lion, cheetah, painted dog, jackal and more…

Fire Pit and Dining under the African Skies

In front of the gazebo is a large outdoor fire pit where guests can have dinner under the stars with a glowing red campfire blazing beside them. Plant based, gluten free, or any other dietary requirement is happily prepared, the chefs are very passionate about the food.
